Canon is verified facts (from the show, from the world). Buffy is the Slayer, NSA sold 2.4 million copies in one week.

Fanon is commonly accepted "facts" that aren't verified. Um. Lou is a pedophile is a kind of fanon - many of us get that creepy vibe from him and we write into stories. But he's never been convicted of anything and we have no evidence of it. Yet, it's accepted as a kind of "fact" because so many people believe. It's fanon that JC is a kinky sex kind of guy.

Canon is what actually happened. On a television show, it's what happens on screen. With SDB's, it gets a little more confusing, because what they say is often not what really happened, and their stories don't always even verify each others. Generally, tour dates, appearances, anything that happens in the public eye is considered canon, and anything that's factually known such as birthdates and family members' names and such.

Fanon tends to refer to things that get said in fanfic so often that they often become an accepted part of the universe. A lot of times, people won't know the difference. If you read it enough times, it seems true.

For example, Justin and JC were both on the Mickey Mouse Club is canon. That they were close friends at the time is fanon.

That help?

Okay, I think canon is what really has taken place (like the actual events and the chronolgy for these events) in the particular fandom, while fanon is the canon that fans create.

So, Clark saving Lex's life by CPR - canon.

Lex falling in love with Clark the moment he came back to life and saw his face above him - fanon.

That's how I look at the terms. Um. *gets unsure* Better ask someone else too. :)

Cheers,

B.C.
