I have a question . . .

just a general question of opinion for those of you out there who read fic
(*gasp* there might possibly be people on my friendslist who read fic?! no way!)


  • do you *need* things in a story to happen in accordance (time/event wise) to what really happend in life?
  • or can an author move things around to fit the story?

    •   - specifically speaking pre!sync and early!sync

    I say have at it...I'm not a stickler for that sorta thing. If it creates an interesting/enjoyable story then I'm good to go.

    *shrug*

    It's not like we don't have AU's that totally change everything right?

    I prefer my stories to stay true to real life timelines if possible.

    Hmm, depends. Which is totally not the answer you are looking for, sorry, *grin*. I'm usually okay with small changes, things that I'm not quite sure of anyway. Where did they spend Christmas of '99? Ya got me! Make up whatever you like. Want to write the story with everything exactly the same except that Lance started the band instead of Chris? Convince me. Make it the point of the story and don't just drop into the sotry as a starting point to go off on some tangent and not address how that affects things.

    Now everyone's opinion will vary and I am sure that if I knew every little detail of their careers, I might be more sensitive to canon, but as long as you have reason to change something and if has real meaning to the story, I say go for it.

    if it's me... reading OR writing... my preference is (if there's established canon) that the story/timeline stay as close to what really happened as possible. Of course things are a bit blurry pre-nsync, which is both easier and harder, imo. (canon slut, here, yo)

    do you have specific events in mind, hon? I saw your answer above, to Saturn... because I have passing fair knowledge of some of the pre-nsync stuff, and know of some good archive reference sources, too.

    I say its fiction, so its pretty much up to your imagination...as long as it makes sense ~ go for it.

    An author can do whaever they want with events and timelines, as far as I'm concerned. The only thing that has to stay "true to life" is the characterization, and even that is obviously subject to debate because none of us know the boys personally in the first place!

    all things are blurry when it comes to pre! and early!sync, so i take those things into consideration when reading stories. i don't really write that because i like to write in the now, but that's just me. but if you're looking for something specific [livejournal.com profile] canalbaby has a pretty good time line in her memories if thats what you need.

    Actually, when I read a fic I don't really care if it follows the timeline or not.
